Saturday Science Club
Are you a GCSE/A-level/BTEC or mature student interested in exploring the chemical sciences?
Since December 2012, I and my reasearch and undergraduate students have been passionate about sharing chemistry to young people of Greater Manchester and Lancashire in the settings of the teaching laboratories of the university. Our created 'Saturday Chemistry Club' was born out of accident but soon grew into an activity that we believe is unique in the country.
Sponsored by BASF Chemicals, I and my postgraduate students have opened-up the university’s chemistry teaching laboratories to GCSE Yr 9,10,11 and A-level/BTEC Yr 12,13 students to promote and enthuse all of the merits and delights of chemistry! Practical classes covering the strands of the chemical sciences (biochemical, analytical, inorganic and organic) are held on a rota basis between 10 am and 1 pm on selected Saturday mornings. There is no charge to attend at all and this is an unique chance for young people to discover what the chemical sciences are in their function and gain valuable laboratory skills. Brief details of the club are as follows:
• Steven Rossington is CRB checked and will provide a CRB certificate to all attending.
• Labs run from 10 – 12 noon/1pm in the university’s Cockcroft Building.
• Labs to be run on the following dates: dates or the spring of 2020 will be announced in due-course.
• Labs are practical sessions from our first year lab portfolio and cover our biomedicine, biochemistry, chemistry, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical science programmes and split between biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry practical sessions.
